Château de Fieuzal Blanc 2021

Château de Fieuzal Blanc is a dry white Bordeaux from Pessac-Leognan, an estate whose white has long been held in higher regard than its classification suggests.

Fieuzal lies in the commune of Leognan, within Pessac-Leognan, the appellation created in 1987 to cover the gravel soils immediately south and west of Bordeaux. This is the oldest wine growing part of Bordeaux and the only district in the region with a classification covering both red and white wine, drawn up for the Graves in the 1950s. The deep gravel here drains freely and holds warmth, which is what allows Cabernet to ripen so close to the city. The white is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, barrel fermented and matured on lees with regular stirring, in the manner that has become standard for serious white Bordeaux. Only a small quantity is made, since white plantings occupy a fraction of the estate.

Serve at around 10 to 12 degrees with oysters, grilled fish or roast chicken; unlike most dry whites it will develop in bottle over ten years or more.
