Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres Rouge 2022

Château de Nalys Châteauneuf-du-Pape Saintes Pierres Rouge is the second wine of a historic estate on the plateau at the heart of the appellation.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape was shaped by the Avignon papacy in the fourteenth century and formalised in the 1930s as the template for the French appellation system. Thirteen varieties are permitted, and Nalys works with the full set, including rarities such as Muscardin, Vaccarèse and Terret noir that most growers pulled out long ago. The vineyards lie on sandy soils and beds of galets roulés near the La Crau sector, east of the village. The estate passed to the Guigal family of Ampuis in 2017, and Saintes Pierres de Nalys is the label under which the younger vines and lighter parcels are bottled, made in the same cellar and to the same standards as the grand vin.

Serve at around 16 degrees with roast lamb, herbed sausages or ratatouille; it drinks well young and will keep for several years.
