Description
Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé is a Mourvèdre-dominant rosé from one of the highest vineyards in the appellation.
Bandol, on the Provençal coast east of Marseille, is built around Mourvèdre, and Pibarnon's rosé carries an unusually high proportion of it at 65%, with 35% Cinsault. The estate is certified organic and its vines are set out on an amphitheatre of terraces on the Colline du Télégraphe, at around 300 metres, which is among the highest ground in Bandol. Altitude and sea breezes keep the nights cool and the harvest fresh. The soil is the estate's defining feature: les marnes bleues, a chalky blue-tinted clay rich in microfossils, also found in the Jura and at Pomerol, valued for its water retention and its effect on freshness and structure. The fruit comes from old, low-yielding vines, and the wine was matured for six months in neutral oak, giving it more weight and grip than most Provençal rosé.
A rosé for the table rather than the aperitif, it suits bouillabaisse, grilled octopus or roast pork. Serve at 8-10°C.
