Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé Nuances 2019

Chateau de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé Nuances is a 100 per cent Mourvèdre micro-cuvée made in the older, structured style of Bandol rosé.

Bandol built its name on Mourvèdre, and its rosés were once wines of substance made to be cellared. Château de Pibarnon, whose organically farmed terraces sit high above the Mediterranean, produced Nuances as a deliberate return to that idea. It is drawn from specific low-yielding old-vine plots, including fruit from the estate's prized Bel Air parcel, and spends considerably longer in the cellar than the classic Pibarnon rosé. The grapes received seven days of skin contact, after which the juice was bled saignée-style without pressing. Fermentation and ageing took place with natural yeasts in a combination of Italian amphorae and a large 30-hectolitre Stockinger foudre. Where much Bandol rosé has been getting lighter and more frivolous to chase the Côtes de Provence market, this is the antidote: layered and deeply hewn, with a level of texture and intensity rarely seen in the category.

It can be enjoyed now or kept for several years, and suits richer food. Serve at 10-12°C with truffle risotto, duck confit or roast pheasant.
