Description
Description
Château de Sales is a Pomerol, made at the largest estate in an appellation otherwise known for its very small properties.
Pomerol is tiny, a little under eight hundred hectares on a plateau north of Libourne, and has never adopted a classification; reputation there is made bottle by bottle. Most estates are minute, a few hectares worked by a single family, which makes Château de Sales, at close to fifty hectares, a genuine outlier. It sits towards the north western edge of the appellation, on lighter sand and gravel over clay, and has remained with the same family for a remarkably long time, a continuity rare anywhere in Bordeaux. Merlot dominates the blend, as it does across Pomerol, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in support.
Serve at around 17 degrees with roast duck, veal or mushroom dishes; it is approachable earlier than most Bordeaux but will keep for ten years.
