Description
Château du Cèdre Marcel is the estate's entry level Malbec, named after Marcel Verhaeghe, the Belgian who planted the property after the war.
Cahors lies on the river Lot upstream of Bordeaux and is the historic home of Malbec, known locally as Côt or Auxerrois. Château du Cèdre is at Vire-sur-Lot at the warm western end of the valley, where the Verhaeghe family farm around thirty certified organic hectares split between the gravel terraces above the river and the limestone causse of the plateau above. Work there is parcel by parcel, with ambient yeast, long macerations and a light hand with sulphur. Marcel sits at the foot of that range: pure Malbec from the younger plantings, fermented in tank, given no new oak and bottled under screwcap so it can be opened young without ceremony. It is the bottling that shows what Malbec tastes like in Cahors before barrel and extended ageing are added to the picture.
Dark-fruited, firm but unfussy, it suits burgers, sausages, hard cheese and midweek cooking; serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you like.
