Description
Château-Figeac Petit Figeac is the second wine of Château-Figeac, drawn from the same gravel soils in the west of Saint-Émilion.
Figeac sits on three rises of gravel on the boundary with Pomerol, a soil far more typical of the Médoc than of the right bank, and plants Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in roughly equal measure to Merlot, which is most unusual for the appellation. Petit Figeac is made from the parcels and vats not chosen for the grand vin, largely the younger vines, and is vinified in the same cellar by the same team. It is matured in French oak, though for a shorter time and with less new wood, which gives a wine that shows the character of the estate rather earlier.
Decant briefly and serve at around 17 degrees with roast or grilled red meat, duck or firm cheeses; it drinks well from about five years and holds comfortably for a good deal longer.
