Description
Chateau Gazin is a Pomerol from one of the largest estates on the plateau, with Pétrus for a neighbour.
Gazin lies on the eastern side of the Pomerol plateau, its vines running up to those of Pétrus and L'Évangile; in 1969 the estate sold a parcel of land to its famous neighbour, which says something about where the boundary falls. At around twenty-four hectares it is one of the biggest properties in an appellation otherwise made up of smallholdings, and it has belonged to the Bailliencourt dit Courcol family for generations. Merlot dominates the plantings, as it does across Pomerol, with the two Cabernets in support, on gravel and clay over the iron-rich subsoil known locally as crasse de fer. Pomerol has never had a classification, so reputation alone does the work.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at about 17 degrees with roast beef, duck or game; it rewards a decade or more in the cellar.
