Description
Description
Château-Grillet is a single-estate appellation of steep, south-facing terraces in the northern Rhône, planted entirely to Viognier.
Château-Grillet is one of the smallest appellations in France, a natural amphitheatre of granite terraces above the Rhône near Condrieu, and the whole of it belongs to a single property. Viognier is the only permitted variety. This release is restrained and tightly wound rather than showy, which is characteristic of the site even in warm seasons, and it carries the power the estate's wines are known to hold for decades. The grapes were chilled before whole-bunch pressing, the juice settled for a day or two, then fermented with wild yeasts and finished in barrel, going through full malolactic conversion. Maturation runs about twelve months in barrel, sometimes longer, followed by six to eight months in stainless steel. Under the current regime only one new 300-litre barrel enters the cellar each year, giving roughly fifteen per cent new wood, with the rest second to fourth use.
Decant early if drinking young; it suits lobster, roast poultry or veal with morels. Serve at 10-12°C.
