Description
This is the Côtes du Rhône made at Château-Grillet from the estate's younger vines and lower terraces, which fall outside the boundary of its own appellation.
Château-Grillet is a walled amphitheatre of about four hectares on the granite slopes above the Rhône between Vérin and Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, laid out across 102 terraces held up by dry-stone walls the locals call chaillées, from roughly 150 to 250 metres. The whole is planted to Viognier. The Neyret-Gachet family owned it from 1827 until 2011, when François Pinault's Artémis Domaines took over; a new cellar in 2012 with very small tanks made it possible to ferment each part of the vineyard separately. Fruit from the younger vines and the lower, more exposed terraces goes into this bottling, which is labelled Côtes du Rhône because the Château-Grillet appellation covers only the grand vin. Volumes are around a thousand bottles. Vinification follows the estate's method, with ageing on fine lees in used barrels, but is kept shorter to preserve aromatics.
Drink over the next two to three years; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or lightly spiced Asian dishes.
