Château-Grillet Côtes du Rhône 2023

Château-Grillet's Côtes du Rhône is pure Viognier grown on the slopes of the tiny Château-Grillet monopole appellation.

Château-Grillet is one of the smallest appellations in France, a single amphitheatre of terraced granite above the river at Vérin, planted only to Viognier. This bottling is drawn from the younger vines, up to about 25 years old, and from parcels on the more fertile soils at the foot of the property, which is why it carries the humbler Côtes du Rhône name. It is made in the same way as the grand vin: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, then a year's ageing split evenly between stainless steel and neutral 228-litre barrels, followed by six months' rest in tank before bottling. The result is more generous and more open in its youth than the Château-Grillet cuvée while keeping the tightly wound, saline character of the terroir.

Drink over the next five to eight years with roast chicken, scallops or a mild curry; serve at 10–12°C.
