Description
Château L'Eglise-Clinet is one of the smallest and most admired estates in Pomerol, a handful of hectares beside the church at the centre of the appellation.
The vineyard sits on the plateau where clay and gravel meet, and it holds an unusual proportion of very old vines: much of the planting survived the catastrophic frost of February 1956 that forced most of Pomerol to start again, and some rows date from the 1930s. The property was made famous by Denis Durantou, who took it on in 1983 and ran it until his death in 2020, since when his daughters have continued the work. Merlot leads the blend with an important share of Cabernet Franc. Production is very small, and since Pomerol has no classification the estate's standing rests purely on what it bottles.
Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast duck, beef or game, decanting while young; it will cellar for a decade or more.
