Description
Chateau La Mondotte Grand Cru Classe is a Saint-Émilion from a small vineyard on the limestone plateau east of the town, and one of the appellation's more remarkable modern stories.
La Mondotte covers roughly four and a half hectares near Troplong Mondot, planted mainly to Merlot with Cabernet Franc, on clay over limestone. It belongs to Comte Stephan von Neipperg, whose family also own Château Canon-la-Gaffelière nearby. Its reputation was made in the 1990s: when the authorities declined to let the fruit be absorbed into Canon-la-Gaffelière's grand vin, Neipperg bottled it separately, farmed the parcel intensively and produced a wine that was quickly sought after well beyond Bordeaux. In 2012 it was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion classification, a rapid rise for a vineyard that had been effectively anonymous a generation before.
Decant and serve at about 17 degrees with beef, lamb or game; it has the structure to age for two decades.
