Description

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac is an old vintage Bas Armagnac made entirely from Baco and bottled at its natural strength.

Bas Armagnac is the western and most highly regarded part of the region, where sandy soils and the traditional continuous still give brandy of aromatic lift rather than sheer weight. Laballe distils in the domaine's 1923 wood-fired copper still and ages in Chêne Noir Gascon, 410-litre barrels coopered from oak of the neighbouring Landes forest; the thick-grained wood releases tannin and spice slowly, which is what allows these spirits to spend decades in cask. Baco, a French-American hybrid now confined to armagnac country, was the mainstay of the region until the late 1970s and gives a rounder, earthier spirit than Ugni Blanc. Nothing is added for colour and bottling is brut de fût, unfiltered and at natural alcohol, generally from a single barrel. This release is 100 per cent Baco from a strong year for the region.

A spirit to take slowly after dinner, neat and at room temperature; it holds up to dark chocolate, roasted nuts and aged hard cheese.
