Description

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac in this vintage release is 100% Baco, from an estate that has been in the same family for eight generations.

The great spirit of Gascony has been made in this part of south-west France for at least seven centuries, predating Cognac — produced in the Charente valley three hours to the north — by around 150 years, though global attention has long favoured the better-marketed cousin. Cyril Laudet and his wife Julie are among those working to change that. Château Laballe stands at Parleboscq, between the Landes forest, the largest in France, and the Gers river, within the Bas Armagnac terroir. Jean-Dominique Laudet bought the domaine in 1820 after a career in the spice trade, wanting to settle in the country and make France's oldest spirit; Cyril and Julie are the eighth generation. The spirit is distilled on the estate and matured in Landes oak, then bottled without added colour and without filtration.

Serve it neat at room temperature in a tulip glass at the end of a meal, with dark chocolate, prunes or a strong washed-rind cheese.
