Description

Château Laballe Bas Armagnac is a single-vintage Gascon brandy made entirely from Baco, the hybrid variety unique to Armagnac.

Armagnac is one of the few appellations in France permitted to use Baco Blanc, bred in the region in the late nineteenth century and valued for the weight and length it gives after long ageing. Château Laballe lies at Parleboscq in Bas Armagnac, at the edge of the Landes forest, and has been in Laudet family hands since 1820. The spirit is distilled in the estate's wood-fired copper still of 1923 and then matured in Chêne Noir Gascon, 410-litre casks made from local Landes oak whose thick grain contributes noticeably more tannin and spice than standard cooperage. No colour is added at any stage, and the brandy is bottled brut de fût — unfiltered, at cask strength, and frequently from a single barrel.

Serve at room temperature in a tulip glass, after dinner, with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or an aged cheese. A few minutes in the glass helps it open.
