Description
Château Laballe Bas Armagnac is a single-cask vintage armagnac from the Landes, bottled unfiltered at its natural strength.
Bas Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of the three armagnac zones, its sandy soils giving eaux-de-vie that age with fruit and finesse rather than sheer power. Château Laballe works from estate-grown Ugni Blanc and distils in the domaine's 1923 wood-fired copper still, an alambic armagnaçais that runs at low strength and leaves a good deal of character in the spirit. Maturation then takes place in Chêne Noir Gascon, 410-litre barrels coopered from oak of the nearby Landes forest, whose thick grain contributes the tannin and spice that mark the house style. Nothing is added for colour, and the spirits are bottled brut de fût, unfiltered and at natural alcohol, usually from a single barrel. This release is entirely Ugni Blanc, drawn from Pièce n°A2-5, from a year that gave the distillery unusual tension.
A digestif to take slowly at room temperature, neat in a tulip glass rather than over ice; it also holds up to dark chocolate, aged comté or a coffee after dinner.
