Description

Chateau Lafaurie Peyraguey, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is a sweet white from Sauternes, ranked a Premier Cru in the classification of 1855.

The estate lies in the commune of Bommes, in the heart of Sauternes, where the cold waters of the Ciron meet the warmer Garonne. That meeting produces the autumn mists that allow botrytis cinerea, noble rot, to take hold; the grapes shrivel and concentrate on the vine and are picked by hand in successive passes over several weeks, sometimes berry by berry, which is why yields here are a fraction of those in the rest of Bordeaux. Sémillon dominates the plantings, with Sauvignon Blanc for lift, and the wine is fermented and matured in barrel. Silvio Denz of the crystal house Lalique bought the property in 2014 and restored the chateau.

Serve well chilled, at about 8 degrees, with foie gras, blue cheese or a fruit tart; it will keep for decades.
