Château Lafite Rothschild Les Carruades de Lafite Rothschild, 2nd Vin 2022

Château Lafite Rothschild Les Carruades de Lafite Rothschild, 2nd Vin is the second wine of Lafite, drawn from the same Pauillac vineyard as the grand vin.

The name comes from the plateau of Carruades, the gravel terrace beside the château that was added to the estate in the nineteenth century and has long been counted among its finest land. A wine under this name has appeared since the 1800s, though in its modern form it is a selection of the younger vines and the vats not taken for the grand vin. The blend usually carries a higher proportion of Merlot than Lafite itself, with Cabernet Sauvignon at its heart and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is made in the same cellars by the same team, and aged in barrel with a smaller share of new oak.

Serve at 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game birds, decanting an hour or two ahead. It is approachable rather earlier than the grand vin but still rewards cellaring.
