Château Laroque Saint Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2022

Château Laroque Saint Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a Merlot led red from the limestone plateau at Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, on the eastern side of the Saint-Émilion appellation.

Laroque is one of the larger classed growths of Saint-Émilion, a handsome eighteenth century château built around a mediaeval tower and surrounded by a single block of vines. The plateau here is the same bank of hard limestone that runs beneath the town itself, holding water through dry summers and keeping the vines even in their growth. Merlot dominates the planting, with Cabernet Franc in support. Farming has been tightened considerably in recent years, with more precise picking and a gentler approach to oak, and the property retained its Grand Cru Classé rank in the most recent revision of the Saint-Émilion classification.

Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, duck or mushroom dishes, decanting younger bottles an hour ahead. It is approachable earlier than many classed growths of the appellation and drinks well over ten years or so.
