Description
Chateau Latour, 1er Grand Cru Classé En 1855 is a Pauillac First Growth standing on the gravel banks of the Gironde at the southern edge of the commune.
The heart of the estate is the walled Enclos, the block of deep gravel croupes surrounding the squat stone tower that gives the property its name and its label. Drainage here is close to perfect, the estuary moderates frost, and the result is one of the most consistent sites in the Medoc. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend, supported by Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Latour was named a First Growth in the 1855 classification and has never left that company. In 2012 the estate withdrew from the en primeur system, choosing instead to hold its wines back and release them only when it judges them ready to drink.
Cellaring is the whole point; decant a mature bottle carefully and serve at around 17 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, beef or game birds.
