Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2010

Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Grenache-led red from one of the largest and longest established estates in the appellation.

The Mont-Redon plateau sits at the north western limit of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a high, wind exposed terrace buried under a deep bed of galets roulés over red clay and sand. The Abeille and Fabre families have run the property since 1923 and also farm in Lirac and the wider Côtes du Rhône. The red draws on most of the varieties the appellation permits, with Grenache well in front and Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault filling out the frame. Fruit is picked by hand and vinified parcel by parcel, and there is no new barrique in the cellar: élevage passes in concrete vat and large old oak foudre, which is why bottles from the estate age towards savoury depth and dried herb rather than wood. Wines are held at the property before release.

Fully mature and warm in style, it belongs with braised beef, game birds, daube and washed rind cheeses; decant before serving at around 17 degrees.
