Description
Chateau Musar Jeune Red is the young, unoaked red from Lebanon's most famous winery, grown high in the Bekaa Valley.
Musar was founded in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, who built his cellars at Ghazir north of Beirut while sourcing fruit from the Bekaa, a broad plateau lying at around a thousand metres between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon ranges. The altitude brings cool nights and a long growing season, and the grapes still travel over the mountains to the coast to be made. Serge Hochar took charge in 1959 and famously kept the winery running through the civil war years. The Jeune range was created for earlier drinking: Cinsault, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon fermented and raised in tank rather than barrel, so the wine goes out fresh and unmarked by oak.
Serve it lightly chilled, at around 15 degrees, with grilled lamb, kofte, or a table of mezze. It is also a good introduction to a producer whose reputation rests on much longer lived wines.
