Description
Château Peby Faugeres, Grand Cru Classé is a Saint-Émilion made entirely from Merlot, grown on the clay and limestone of the appellation's eastern côtes.
The wine was created in 1998 as the top selection of the Faugères estate, on the eastern edge of Saint-Émilion towards Castillon, and is named after Péby Guisez, whose family owned the property. Silvio Denz, the Swiss businessman behind the Lalique glassworks, bought Faugères in 2005 and commissioned the architect Mario Botta to design the gravity-fed winery that now stands there, a striking piece of modern building in a very traditional landscape. The wine comes from a parcel of old Merlot vines on clay-limestone, picked by hand, sorted carefully and matured in new French oak. Quantities are small, as the selection is drawn from a single restricted block rather than the whole estate.
Serve at around 18°C with beef, lamb or truffled dishes, decanting an hour ahead; it will reward a decade in the cellar.
