Description
Chateau Péby Faugres Grand Cru Classé is a pure Merlot from the clay and limestone slopes on the eastern edge of Saint-Emilion.
The Faugeres estate lies at Saint-Etienne-de-Lisse, a village on the far side of the Saint-Emilion plateau where limestone gives way to clay and the vineyards catch a good deal of sun. Peby Faugeres is the estate's selection from its best Merlot parcels and is bottled as a single variety, which is unusual even in this Merlot-dominated appellation. The Swiss collector Silvio Denz took over the property in the mid 2000s and commissioned the architect Mario Botta to design a new gravity-fed winery, completed at the end of that decade. The wine was named a Grand Cru Classe in the 2012 revision of the Saint-Emilion classification.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with beef, duck or mushroom dishes; it will also keep well for a decade or more.
