Description
Château Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Médoc comes from the smallest of the Médoc's communal appellations, long a source of serious claret at sensible prices.
Moulis-en-Médoc lies inland from the river, west of Margaux, and covers only a few hundred hectares of vines. Poujeaux sits on a gravel ridge at Grand Poujeaux, the best sector of the appellation, where the soils are as deep and stony as anything in the classed-growth communes nearby. The estate has long been one of the two leading names of Moulis, and it was bought in 2008 by the Cuvelier family, owners of Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make up the bulk of the blend, with a little Petit Verdot for colour and structure, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels in the estate's own cellars.
Serve at 17 to 18°C with roast lamb, steak or duck; it is enjoyable within a few years of release and will hold for a decade or more.
