Description
Château Rieussec, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is a First Growth Sauternes from Fargues, the commune that borders Yquem.
Rieussec was ranked Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification of Sauternes and Barsac, and has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) since 1984. The vineyard lies on one of the higher points of the appellation, on gravel and sandy clay, and is planted principally to Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a little Muscadelle. Autumn mists rising where the cold waters of the Ciron meet the warmer Garonne encourage botrytis cinerea, the noble rot, which shrivels the berries and concentrates them. Pickers go through the vines in repeated passes, taking only the affected fruit, and the wine is fermented and matured in oak barrels.
Serve chilled, at around 8 to 10 degrees, with foie gras, blue cheese or fruit tarts; and the wine rewards decades in the cellar.
