Château Rieussec Carmes de Rieussec 375mL 2020

Château Rieussec Carmes de Rieussec is the second wine of Château Rieussec, a first growth of Sauternes on the high ground at Fargues.

Rieussec sits at one of the highest points of the appellation, on a plateau next to Château d'Yquem, and was classified a first growth in 1855. It has belonged to Domaines Barons de Rothschild, owners of Château Lafite, since 1984. Carmes de Rieussec is drawn from parcels and lots not selected for the grand vin and is made in the same way: successive passes through the vineyard to gather only berries affected by noble rot, gentle pressing and ageing in barrel. Sémillon does most of the work, with Sauvignon Blanc and a little Muscadelle alongside. Because botrytis arrives unevenly, the harvest can stretch over many weeks and several separate trips through the rows.

Serve well chilled at 8 to 10°C with foie gras, blue cheese or a fruit dessert.
