Description
Château Saint-Georges is the best known property of the Saint-Émilion satellites, farming a single hillside block beneath a château designed by Victor Louis.
The satellite appellations north of Saint-Émilion share the geology of the plateau itself, and Saint-Georges is the smallest and closest of them, separated from the classified vineyards only by the Barbanne valley. The estate occupies the crest and southern flank of the ridge, so that its vines face the Saint-Émilion slope across the valley on clay-limestone soils that suit Merlot particularly well. The Desbois family have run the property for generations and work in a deliberately classical manner, harvesting by hand and fermenting in vat before ageing in oak barrel. Merlot dominates the blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a little Malbec adding structure and lift, and bottles are held at the château until they have begun to open out.
Firm and savoury with the density of clay-limestone Merlot, it suits roast lamb, beef and mature cheeses; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
