Description
Château Sociando-Mallet is one of the Haut-Médoc's most celebrated names, an unclassified estate whose wines are regularly judged alongside, and often above, official classified growths.
Sited on a gravel plateau close to the Gironde estuary near the border of St-Estèphe, Château Sociando-Mallet was transformed from the late 1960s onward under the direction of the late Jean Gautreau, whose exacting standards turned a modest property into one of the appellation's benchmark estates. Never included in the 1855 or Cru Bourgeois classifications, the château has nonetheless built a reputation as one of Bordeaux's great overachievers, farming the traditional Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend with a level of care usually associated with classified growths.
A powerful, ageworthy red built in a classic Médoc mould, it is well suited to the cellar and to serving alongside roasted and grilled meats, game and mature cheeses.
