Description
Château Suduiraut, 1er Grand Cru Classé is a Sauternes from Preignac, made on land that adjoins the plateau of Yquem.
Suduiraut was ranked Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, and its formal gardens are traditionally attributed to André Le Nôtre, who laid out the grounds at Versailles. The vineyard sits on sand and gravel over clay, planted largely to Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc. Cool water from the Ciron meets the warmer Garonne close by, and the mists that gather in autumn allow botrytis cinerea to shrivel the berries, concentrating sugar and acidity alike. Pickers make repeated passes through the vines, selecting bunch by bunch and often berry by berry, and the wine is fermented and matured in oak barrels over a long period.
Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees with foie gras, roquefort or a simple fruit tart; a bottle will keep for several decades in a cool cellar and is worth opening a little ahead of the meal.
