Description
Château Tertre Roteboeuf, 1er Cru Grand Classé is a Saint-Émilion made by François Mitjavile on the slopes at Saint-Laurent-des-Combes.
Mitjavile took over his wife's family property in 1978 and gave it the name it carries now, the tertre being the mound and rôteboeuf a reference to the oxen that laboured up it. He has worked outside the conventions of the district ever since: the estate stands apart from the Saint-Émilion classification and the wine is sold simply as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Yields are very low, picking is exceptionally late, and the wine is raised in a high proportion of new oak. Merlot dominates the south facing clay and limestone slopes, with Cabernet Franc in support. Production is small and the following devoted.
Decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast lamb, beef or mushroom dishes; it can be opened young, but a decade or more in the cellar shows it at its best.
