Description
Chateau Valandraud Grand Cru Classe is the original garage wine of Saint-Emilion, made from parcels assembled by a couple with no vineyard inheritance behind them.
Jean-Luc Thunevin and Murielle Andraud made their first wine in 1991 from well under a hectare, working in a garage in the town rather than a chateau, hence the label vin de garage that attached itself to them and the wave of small, intensely made Saint-Emilions that followed. The estate has since grown by careful purchase of plots across the appellation, and the blend leans on Merlot with Cabernet Franc, plus small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Carmenere. Yields are low and the winemaking is meticulous. In the 2012 classification Valandraud was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classe B, a remarkable ascent in a single generation.
Decant an hour or more ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with beef, lamb or hard cheeses.
