Description
Chêne Bleu Scipio is a red from the high-altitude La Verrière estate in the Vaucluse, at the northern edge of the southern Rhône.
La Verrière is a restored medieval priory set at around five hundred metres near Crestet, well above the valley floor and ringed by forest rather than by other vineyards. The site is cold at night and slow to ripen by southern Rhône standards, which is rather the point; the estate was rebuilt over two decades with that long growing season in mind. Its reds come from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, hand harvested and matured in French oak, and are bottled under the broader regional appellations because the property sits outside the village boundaries that enclose it. The isolation, and the altitude, are the whole argument for the place. The name Chêne Bleu refers to a blue-marked oak on the property.
It is worth decanting, and suits slow-cooked lamb, game or beef at cool room temperature.
