Description
Clos Ibai Rioja Garnacha Blanca is a single-plot white from a certified-organic vineyard in Rioja Alavesa.
Rioja Alavesa lies on the north bank of the Ebro, where clay and limestone soils and altitudes around 400 metres keep white wines fresher than the regional average. This one comes from a single small plot at Baños de Ebro, planted in 2014 and brought to organic certification by winemaker Daniel Frías and his team. Garnacha Blanca is a minority variety in Rioja, permitted but far less planted than Viura, and it is valued for body and a broad, faintly waxy texture rather than for sharp acidity. The fruit was picked at the end of September and pressed as whole bunches into steel tanks for fermentation, after which the wine matured on its lees for eight months across tank and barrel. Lees ageing rather than new oak does the shaping here, giving a white with real substance and a dry, saline finish.
Ready now and worth keeping two or three years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a firm sheep's cheese.
