Description
Lot 29 XO Exception is Tesseron's original release, a blend of Grande Champagne cognacs drawn from stocks laid down from the 1920s and earlier.
Cognac is distilled twice in copper pot stills from thin, high-acid white wine, and Grande Champagne, the innermost of the region's six crus, has the chalkiest soils and yields the eaux-de-vie that reward the longest ageing. The Tesseron family made its name as buyers and keepers of old stock rather than as a commercial house, and Lot 29 is the cornerstone of the collection: a blend built on distillations begun in the 1920s, with a proportion from 1905 and 1906, aged in cask across three generations of the family. Unusually for a modern cognac, the blend includes some Colombard and Folle Blanche alongside the standard Ugni Blanc; both were widely planted before phylloxera and are now rarities. Long cask ageing in a damp cellar is what produces the rancio character these old lots are prized for.
Ready to drink and stable in bottle for years once opened. Serve neat at room temperature in a tulip glass, after dinner or with dark chocolate and walnuts.
