Colet-Navazos Extra Brut Reserva 2008

Colet-Navazos Extra Brut Reserva is a Penedès sparkling wine finished with a dosage of aged Sherry rather than a conventional liqueur d'expédition.

Penedès, inland from Barcelona, is Catalonia's traditional-method heartland, and this cuvée is a collaboration between the grower Sergi Colet and Equipo Navazos, the Sherry selection house. The partnership began in 2003 from a conversation about what Jerez and Champagne have in common: chalk soils and a reliance on aged reserve wines. The base wines are Xarel·lo and Chardonnay grown in Colet's organically tended vineyards at Pacs del Penedès and Sant Martí Sarroca, and the wines fall under the Penedès DO. The second fermentation is carried out with a small addition of flor yeast, and the dosage is made up from different La Bota Sherries. The Reserva is given roughly four years on lees, a year longer than the standard Extra Brut, which broadens the texture and pushes the wine further towards its savoury, Jerez-inflected side.

It is drinking well now and will keep for several years, and it suits oysters, jamón ibérico and roast chicken. Serve at about 8°C.
