Corzano e Paterno Chianti Terre di Corzano 2024

Terre di Corzano is the core Chianti of Corzano e Paterno, an organically farmed estate in the hills south of Florence.

The name translates as the soils of Corzano, and soil is the point: the estate's rocky, south-facing slopes are alberese, the compact clay and limestone littered with pebbles that tends to yield particularly aromatic Tuscan reds. The wine is 90% Sangiovese co-fermented with 10% Canaiolo, all hand-harvested and all organically grown. Around 15% of the fruit goes in as whole bunches, fermentation is spontaneous, and maturation takes place in 25- and 40-hectolitre botti rather than barriques. Arianna Gelpke favours the softening effect of large-format wood on Sangiovese tannins, and the traditional approach has become uncommon in Tuscany. The result is transparent in style, built on purity of hillside Sangiovese fruit with supple tannins and succulent acidity, while the Canaiolo adds a little sweet spice to the blend. Corzano sits outside the Classico boundary, which is largely why the wine costs what it does.

Drinking well now and over the next five years; serve at 16-18°C with smoky grilled meats, roast pork or a deep-flavoured lasagne.
