Description
Corzano e Paterno Toscana Rosso Il Corzanello is the estate's organic entry-level red, named after the medieval fortified farmhouse on the property.
Corzano e Paterno lies in the hills of San Casciano Val di Pesa, south-west of Florence, and farms organically. This IGT Toscana bottling blends Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Merlot, drawn chiefly from the estate's cooler sites so that freshness and aromatic lift are preserved. The winemaking is deliberately restrained: the grapes are given a cold soak of about a week before fermenting naturally in stainless steel, and as winemaker Arianna Gelpke puts it, the aim is not structure but drinkability, so the juice is drawn off the skins after only a few days and finishes fermentation in tank. There is no attempt at extraction or new oak. The wine keeps chalky Tuscan tannin and freshening acidity behind bright raspberry and cherry fruit.
Ready on release and best within three or four years; serve at 16C with barbecued chicken, a silky ragù or wood-fired pizza.
