Description
Disznókő Tokaji Late Harvest Furmint is a sweet wine made from botrytised bunches rather than berry-by-berry aszú selection.
Disznókő is a historic first-growth estate at the southern edge of the Tokaj region, on volcanic soils. László Mészáros makes this wine largely from botrytised Furmint, with around six per cent each of Zéta and Hárslevelű, the berries having shrivelled to roughly half their original volume. Known in Hungarian as Késői Szüretelésű, the late harvest category dispenses with the painstaking berry-by-berry picking used for Aszú: whole botrytised clusters and part-clusters are selected and harvested, macerated briefly and then pressed. The wine is racked into used French oak, including barrels from Disznókő's sister property Château Suduiraut in Sauternes, and matures there for six months. It is a lighter, more immediate expression of Tokaj sweetness than an Aszú, and a good introduction to the region.
Ready to drink and good for a decade. Serve at 8-10°C with fruit tarts, pâté or a mild blue cheese.
