Disznókő Tokaji Late Harvest Furmint 500ml 2019

Disznókő Tokaji Late Harvest Furmint is a sweet Hungarian white made from botrytised bunches picked without the berry-by-berry sorting used for Aszú.

Tokaj, in Hungary's north-east, is one of the oldest classified wine regions in the world, and the autumn mists rising off the Bodrog and Tisza rivers reliably bring noble rot to its volcanic and loess slopes. Disznókő is a First Growth estate of the 1737 classification, and László Mészáros makes this wine in the Késői Szüretelésű, or late harvest, style. Selected botrytised clusters and part-clusters, shrivelled to roughly half their original volume, are harvested together and given a short maceration before pressing. Alongside the dominant Furmint there is around six per cent each of Zéta and Hárslevelű. The wine was racked into used French oak, some of it from Disznókő's sister property Château Suduiraut in Sauternes, and matured there for six months. The brief élevage preserves Furmint's pungency and acidity, and the wine finished at roughly 130 g/L residual sugar, held in balance by punchy acid and a gentle grip.

It is drinking well now and will hold for a decade or more. In Hungary a wine like this is as often served as an aperitif or with goat's cheese and pâté on toast as with dessert; serve it at 8–10°C.
