Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2022

Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc is a blend of 80 per cent Marsanne and 20 per cent Roussanne bottled under screwcap to keep it fresh.

White accounts for a small share of Crozes-Hermitage production, and the two permitted varieties, Marsanne and Roussanne, tend towards richness on the appellation's warmer, deeper soils. Graillot's fruit comes from a 2.7-hectare plot on the deep alluvial ground of Pont-de-l'Isère, in the southern sector of the appellation, from vines now around forty years old. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally in a mix of one-year-old 600-litre demi-muids and stainless steel. Because the old vines and the soils give considerable weight, particularly from the Marsanne, Maxime Graillot blocks malolactic conversion to hold on to acidity, and he bottles under screwcap for the same reason. The wine is amply textured, with grip on the finish and the gentle warmth ripe Marsanne brings.

Drinking well on release and worth keeping three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a creamy mushroom pasta.
