Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2023

Domaine Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage Blanc is a Marsanne-led white from the deep alluvial soils of Pont-de-l’Isère, bottled under screwcap to keep it fresh.

White Crozes-Hermitage is a small part of the appellation and is generally built on Marsanne, with Roussanne playing a supporting role; here the split is 80 to 20. The fruit comes from a 2.7-hectare plot in the southern sector of the appellation at Pont-de-l’Isère, on deep alluvial ground rather than the limestone hillsides further north, and the vines are now reaching 40 years of age. Grapes are pressed as whole bunches and fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of one-year-old 600-litre demi-muids and stainless steel. Because the soils and the low yields of old Marsanne give a naturally rich wine, Maxime Graillot arrests malolactic conversion to hold on to acidity, and bottles under screwcap for the same reason. The result is amply textured but focused, finishing with a little grip and the gentle warmth ripe Marsanne brings.

Best over the next four to six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled chicken or a pumpkin and sage risotto.
