Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Génération Dix-Neuf is drawn from the oldest vines in La Moussière, cropped at grand cru Burgundy yields.
Alphonse Mellot has been in Sancerre since 1513 and the current generation farms biodynamically, with La Moussière the estate's largest and best-known holding. Together with its sister cuvée Edmond, Dix-Neuf sits at the far end of the range from modern, textbook Sancerre. It comes from the oldest vines in the Moussière vineyard, approaching a hundred years of age, cropped at yields associated with grand cru Burgundy and in fact at the lower end of that range. The wine was fermented and raised in 2,000-litre tronconique wooden tanks for twelve months before a further spell in steel on lees, and only around 500 cases are made each year. The result is intense and arresting, with citrus oil, pepper, tonic, iodine and pear sorbet playing behind a weightless structure and crackling energy: the intensity and texture of good white Burgundy with the racy acid core of Riesling or Chenin Blanc.
Drink now or cellar for a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, veal or a mature Crottin de Chavignol.
