Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Demoiselle Blanc 2020

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Demoiselle Blanc is a biodynamic single-vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from an east-facing hillside planted in 1951 on the edge of the village.

Sancerre sits at the eastern end of the Loire, where flint, limestone and clay soils give the most structured expressions of Sauvignon Blanc in France. Alphonse Mellot farms biodynamically and is among the growers who have pushed the appellation towards serious, cellar-worthy white wine. La Demoiselle is one of the easier Sancerre vineyards to find, just below the Panoramic Hotel on the edge of town, on deep soils of flint and flinty clay where the fault line runs through the appellation. Winemaking essentially mirrors that of the estate's La Moussière bottling, but yields here are lower still. The result is more restrained in aroma than La Moussière, with chalky, flinty character taking the lead and citrus behind it, and a palate that carries silky yellow fruit on vibrant acidity to a finish marked by a nip of grapefruit bitterness.

Good on release and better for three to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled whiting, asparagus or a Crottin de Chavignol.
