Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière comes from a single biodynamically farmed vineyard on Kimmeridgian marl, half of it fermented in wood.
La Moussière is one of the largest and best-known single vineyards in Sancerre, a gently rolling site on the Saint-Doulchard marls that form part of the same Kimmeridgian chain running north to Chablis. The soils are stony and limestone-rich, and Alphonse Mellot farms them biodynamically at low yields. Half the wine ferments in large wooden fermenters and is raised in oak casks; the balance ferments and rests in traditional concrete vats before the two are blended. Everything then spends around 12 months on fine lees, which is where the wine's characteristic depth and pulpy texture come from. The oak is used for structure rather than flavour, and the result is closer in shape to a white Burgundy than to the brisk, tank-fermented style most Sancerre drinkers expect.
Good now and will develop over five to eight years. Serve at 11-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a crottin de Chavignol.
