Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Les Romains 2020

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Les Romains is a biodynamic single-lieu-dit Sauvignon Blanc grown over a vein of flint south of the town.

Sancerre's reputation rests on three broad soil types, and Les Romains is the flint, or silex, expression. The lieu-dit takes its name from the Roman road that once ran down to the crossing of the Loire, and it lies almost directly south of the town of Sancerre, over the fault line that marks the flint vein. Domaine Alphonse Mellot farms biodynamically and works this vineyard alongside Vacheron and Gitton Père et Fils. While the flint might suggest a strong resemblance to the neighbouring terroir of Pouilly-Fumé across the river, the vines here do not have to dig far before hitting pure limestone, and that shows in the wine. The parcel covers 1.9 hectares planted at a density of 9,000 vines per hectare. Compared with the Mellot cuvées from La Moussière, Les Romains gives racier acidity and a more citrus-driven line.

Drink now or over the next six or seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled whiting or a fresh goat's cheese.
