Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Satellite 2020

Satellite is Alphonse Mellot's Chavignol cuvée, drawn from five parcels on the Kimmeridgian slopes west of Sancerre.

The domaine has held vines in Chavignol for more than fifty years, but the first bottling under this name appeared only in 2008. The four-hectare holding spans five separate parcels, all on Kimmeridgian marl, and includes two hectares on the celebrated terroirs of Le Cul de Beaujeu and Les Monts-Damnés, where the slopes are steep enough to be worked by hand. The Sauvignon Blanc vines are between forty and eighty years old and crop very low. Farming is biodynamic. The juice was fermented with natural yeasts, raised in large, mature oak casks and bottled without filtration, which leaves the wine with the texture and chalky drive those hillsides are known for rather than any obvious oak.

Drinking well now and capable of five to eight years; serve at 10-12°C with Crottin de Chavignol, roast pork or grilled white fish.
