Description
Domaine Antoine Jobard's Volnay comes from a fraction of a hectare in Les Combes, a parcel that once belonged to the old Pommard domaine of André Mussy.
Volnay is the most perfumed of the Côte de Beaune's red villages, a run of limestone slopes between Pommard and Meursault that yields Pinot Noir of scent and fine structure rather than weight. Antoine Jobard is far better known for white Meursault, and the reds remain a small part of the domaine's output. This holding runs to just 0.18 hectares of thirty-year-old vines in Les Combes, on the side of the village that adjoins Pommard. All the fruit is destemmed, a choice the domaine makes here in pursuit of clarity of Pinot fruit rather than added structure from stems, and the wine is raised in the cellar's usual restrained style. Quantities are small, and this is the first allocation of the wine to reach Australia.
Approachable after a couple of years and good for eight or more. Serve at 16-18°C with duck, mushroom risotto or roast veal.
