Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Blanc 2023

Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Blanc is one of the few white wines made in an appellation known almost entirely for Cabernet Franc, and it is given the pick of the estate’s limestone.

Chinon permits Chenin Blanc alongside Cabernet Franc, but white plantings are scarce and are usually pushed onto sites the red grape does not want. Baudry has taken the opposite approach. This organically farmed cuvée draws on two small parcels: 0.8 hectares behind the Château de Sonnay, propagated with cuttings taken from Domaine Huet in Vouvray, and the eroded limestone of La Croix Boissée, the site behind the domaine’s top red. In 2023 the oldest Chenin vines from La Croix Boissée also formed part of the blend. Matthieu Baudry presses slowly and gently, and the juice ferments on its own yeasts until dry, a quarter of it in concrete egg and the rest in old 500- and 600-litre barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered.

Good from release and will hold six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled pork or a hard sheep’s cheese.
